Twin Falls, Idaho ( KMVT-TV / KTWT-TV ) People from California, Utah, Oregon, and Washington are moving to the Gem State.

The Idaho Department of Labor reports the population is growing at a faster rate than the nation.

Joe Tidwell is one of many who moved to Idaho from Southern California.

After graduating college it was tough for him to find a job in his hometown of San Diego.

Therefore, he decided to look elsewhere.

"It's not as fast paced as it was in San Diego. Every time I would apply for jobs they would be filled,” said Joe Tidwell.

He saw the economy booming in the magic valley and took advantage of it.

"I got a job offer with the company that I'm with now. It was a great opportunity so I decided to take advantage of it."

Idaho's population exceeded 1.6 million in 2013, up 1% from 2012.

"We are starting to see the same in migration that we've seen in the past years. We are seeing a lot of retirees coming into our state. I think with the stock market recovery and the economic activity across the nation and I think it's attracting people once again,” said Jan Roeser, Idaho Department of Labor.

Idaho was among 16 states with growth rates of at least 1 percent.

"North Dakota is actually growing the fastest because the oil boom going on there. It has three times the growth than Idaho. We are having our own little boom in South-Central Idaho,” said Roeser.

A boom in the economy, which is leading young people like Tidwell to call Idaho home.
