Idaho Ranks 12th in Overall Heath Nationwide
Burley, Idaho ( KMVT-TV / KTWT-TV )
This year the United Health Foundation ranks Idaho 12th in overall health, up seven spots from just last year.
The higher ranking of the Gem State on the list of healthiest states comes as little surprise to health officials.
Rod Barton, Hospital Administrator for Cassia Regional, notes, “the western United States has better ratings primarily because we have a healthier population. We have lower smoking rates than many other states.”
The low prevalence of smoking is just one of a few strengths the study noted.
Barton adds, “we have lower hospitalization rates so we're much more conservative in our healthcare treatments in Idaho and some of the western states. People genuinely take care of themselves; it’s a more outdoor enthusiastic environment that we live in.”
Jeremy Royal, lead therapist at Canyon View, notes, “I think it really reflects some of the work that we're doing. We're trying harder to reach people at the outpatient side. We're starting to understand better as a healthcare community that physical symptoms don't happen alone; there are emotional and physical symptoms that interact. You have to know the emotional side.”
Among some of the challenges that Idaho still faces is the limited availability of primary care physicians.
Yet, for now doctors celebrate the reflection of success and hard work paying off.
