Burley, Idaho (KMVT-TV) The 2012 Idaho Regatta is underway this evening in Burley.

The race features some of the fastest boat racing in the U.S.

And, several of this year's winners will be walking away with national titles.

Racers kicked it into high gear this weekend in burley hoping to land a spot at the top of the heap.

"We have racers from as far away as Florida and North Carolina and they take it very seriously. And, it's really a great event. It's a world class sporting event," said Mark Moyle, Regatta Chairman.

It's three days of the fastest inboard circle boat racing in the U.S. with boats reaching speeds well over a hundred miles per hour.

"We have eleven different classes. The big grand–daddy class is the K Racing Runabouts. They're an 18 foot flat bottom v–drive that runs up to 1200 horsepower blown alcohol, big block Chevrolets and they're capable of speeds over 140 miles per hour," said Moyle.

Boating legend, Harold Bruce, won the regatta in 2010, walking away with a mink coat.

"We're back tuning the boat up and trying to get it set up so we can win another Mink Coat," said Harold Bruce, Jet Boat Racer.

Bruce won his race Friday, just one of many wins in his 38 years of racing.

"I like this because it's a clean sport. You're in the water, if you fall out of the boat you fall in the water you don't fall in the dirt," said Bruce.

The engine in Bruce's jet boat was built by R and D Marine in Anaheim, California.

"This boat runs, when it's right, will run right at a hundred miles per hour. And, it's going around corners wide open," said Bruce.

He's just one of the many racers hoping to walk away with a title.

The winners in all the flatbottom classes will be crowned as national champions on Sunday.

Tickets to the regatta are 25 dollars for adults.

Kids and under are free.
