Jerome, Idaho ( KMVT-TV / KTWT-TV ) The year 1939 was the official start of the Idaho State Police. 75 years later, the force is running strong and keeping the gem state safe. Joey Martin for Idaho’s First News made a stop in Jerome to check in on the celebration. With 75 years in the books, representatives from around the Southern Idaho law enforcement community came to Jerome to help cut the birthday cake. "Today is our 75th anniversary. We were established in 1939.” The Idaho State Police welcomed former troopers, current law enforcement officials and the public to come and celebrate 75 years of continued service to the state. "We're just welcoming the public to come and celebrate this anniversary with us and see some of the slide presentations, some of the old uniforms and things like that we have... And to be a part of what we have found to be very successful throughout the state in helping the citizens of Idaho travel safely throughout our state... throughout these years. Said Lieutenant Kyle Fullmer, Idaho State Police. Lieutenant Fullmer says that being a part of an organization like ISP... Nothing can compare. "We've had some very successful times within the State Police; we've also had some sad times. But to be a part of the organization, as long as I've been a part of the organization... I'm a proud member of the Idaho State Police." Said Fullmer. Retired trooper Cole Watkins served with ISP for over 35 years. He first joined, back in June of 1961. "It's grown in numbers of course, and it's grown in efficiency. It grew in the fact that there were electronics available towards the end that made things much easier." Said former ISP Officer, Cole Watkins. As for the officers themselves? "I don't believe that the people in the past years, when is first started was sufficiently trained in law enforcement. Then came along in 19.. 62 or 63 came along the ISP Academy to give the officers a solid foundation to act on... not what they thought, but what they knew. I tell you it’s improved… it truly has improved." Said Watkins. ISP... Serving the state of Idaho for 75 years, with the goal of many more to come. "God Bless the United States, God Bless the State Police, Idaho and everybody in it." Said Watkins.
