Jerome County Makes 5th Try To Build New Jail

Twin Falls, Idaho ( KMVT-TV / KTWT-TV ) The proposal to build a new Jerome County Jail will go before the voters for a fifth time in May. But the measure is facing some stiff competition on the ballot this spring.

The Jerome County Jail turns 40 years old next year. While that's not old for you and me, the jail was built with old parts to begin with from the Idaho State Penitentiary. The standards for their yearly inspection originally came from the Idaho Sheriff's Association.

Jerome County Sheriff Doug McFall says, "Today that's where we get the standards to go from. We not only look at the Idaho jail standards, but also the federal jail standards to make sure we're in compliance with all the standards that have been set up."

In the last 40 years, the standards for building jails have changed substantially. Beginning this year, ICRMP, the state agency which insures the Jerome County Jail, could be forced to hand out some consequences if the jail building fails its annual inspection.

Lt. Dan Kennedy says, "Potentially ICRMP could choose to limit the umbrella liability coverage for the jail itself. The lowest level of coverage that ICRMP offers is $500,000."

The roughly ten million dollar jail bond will be going up against the Jerome Wastewater bond, which totals $48.6 million. Voters will cast their ballots on Tuesday, May 21st.

In the meantime, Jerome County will have to make do with what it has now.

McFall says, "Doors that were manufactured back then that are no longer manufactured, we can no longer buy replacement parts for them. We have to have a lot of stuff manufactured specifically for our need, which ends up costing a lot more money than it does from being able to buy it off the shelf."

We'll take a closer look at the Jerome County Jail this weekend on "Connections," our newest show on FOX 14. "Connections" airs Saturday evening at 9:30 p.m. and Sunday morning at 9:00 a.m. sharp.
