Jerome County Sheriff Faces Contested Race

By Jay Michaels

Jerome, Idaho (KMVT-TV) Election Day is tomorrow, for those of us who didn't vote ahead of time. Jerome County Sheriff Doug McFall has an independent opponent, and Kenneth Rushing is challenging McFall's re-election bid.

Doug McFall was elected Jerome County Sheriff four years ago, and he says he believes most of the citizens in Jerome County have been happy with the leadership and services that he's provided during that time.

McFall says, "I've had a lot of people come up and tell me they like the way the sheriff's office is running. They like the idea that we're transparent, that we communicate what's going on with the Sheriff's Office, and use the media to that benefit."

Independent Candidate Kenneth Rushing says, "I knew him for a long time, and until he took over as sheriff and was the boss then, did I realize that there were these other problems going on. Because those problems and the other people I've talked to, that's why I decided to run."

Kenneth Rushing says the people who are really happy with McFall's performance are his friends, and they don't have to work directly with him. McFall says he's worked hard to make the organization uniform, and give patrol officers specific guidelines. He commits to doing the best he can if he's re-elected as Jerome County Sheriff.

Rushing says, "The other citizens that I've talked to, they don't like the way a scene is processed. Someone tires to break into a building, and the deputy shows up to try to talk them into not filing a report just because their insurance is going to cover it."

McFall says, "Better processes put into place to solve crimes and investigations of serious incidents in Jerome County, and also find a solution to the overcrowding issues of the jail."

Regardless of who wins the Sheriff's race in Jerome County, the person elected into office will have to deal with longtime prison overcrowding and the still unresolved need to build a new jail there.
