Law enforcement search for missing snowmobiler in South Hills area

Twin Falls

The search is on for a Magic Valley resident who didn't return home last night from a snowmobiling trip at Magic Mountain.

Monday night, the Twin Falls County and Mini-Cassia Search and Rescue teams are on the hills trying to find the missing person. They haven't released who it is yet. However, police say it's a 43-year-old man from Twin Falls.

Officials say, a rescue mission like this one is very difficult.

As the sun sets over Magic Mountain, temperatures begin to drop. With more snow expected overnight, it's a scene rescuers describe as "not ideal."

Daron Brown, with the Twin Falls County Sheriff’s office, said, "For somebody to spend one night out in weather conditions like this even though they're prepared for it .. 2 nights of cold after all day is tough. More snow could hinder tracks. It's getting tough."

On Monday, more than 25 people scoured the area for any hints of a missing man. Some on snowmobiles, others in an helicopter, while still more in the command center.

Brown said, "We have covered every ground trail and off trails. Any set of snowmobile tracks we are following. Obviously, going into night two concerns us."

The missing man’s truck was found: covered in snow and the snowmobile gone. It's a clue that he didn't return to his truck. Brown said, "We're missing one snowmobiler. If we have one set of tracks that go down, we follow them."

As the hours tick away, and the bitter cold takes over, rescuers worry about that missing person surviving, especially since it will be his second straight night in a row in the mountains.
