Twin Falls, Idaho (KMVT-TV) A local radio personality organized a seminar to teach people how to use Ham radios.

Kelly Klaas who is known for being one of the voices on KLIX 1300, helped the attendees learn how to use these radios in the event of a disaster.

The event took place at Loong Hing restaurant in Twin Falls.

Klaas says the interest in these amateur radios is growing as there are more than 700,000 owners in this country alone.

He adds they're great for meeting new friends, of course staying connected in times of disaster as well and a hobby.

"The capabilities go way beyond your cell phone, a lot of the infrastructure be lost in the event of an emergency ham radio is able to always be there and go through no matter. it's kind of the ultimate communications device."

Klaas says you can purchase ham radios at stores, online and from other operators. He expects the next class to be in September.
