Twin Falls, Idaho ( KMVT-TV / KTWT-TV ) A family is speaking out after a dog they were set to adopt was stolen from a local animal shelter.

"The littlest one talks about her every day, still carries the leash around," said Chalee Giles, asking for her puppy back.

The Giles family is heartbroken.

A little over a week ago they went to the Twin Falls Animal Shelter to pick out a new puppy.

That's where they met Holly.

"She was four to five months is what they thought that she was. She was just very sweet, gentle dog," said Giles.

There was an instant connection between Holly and the family, but it was the bond she formed with their four–year old son that was the deciding factor.

"Took her in the little room and she just came over and sat on his lap and just started licking his face," said Giles.

That was Friday, and they couldn't pick Holly up until the following Wednesday, after she got spayed.

"Me and Jack, my four–year old, we went to the store Wednesday morning, got everything we would need, everything, bed, kennel, dog food, everything," said Giles.

They arrived at the shelter around 1 p.m., finished their paperwork, but when they went to her cage she was gone.

They searched for two hours before returning home.

"It was heartbreaking. It was. It really was because we kind of took to her," said Giles.

The shelter is concerned about Holly's well–being and is asking the person who took her to bring her back.

"Bring it back and I'm not going to ask any questions. I just want the dog back because I want to know that it's safe," said Debbie Blackwood, Twin Falls Animal Shelter.

Holly's picture still hangs on the refrigerator at the family's home.

The Giles’ holding onto hope that someday they'll be reunited with the puppy that already felt like one of the family.

Shelter employees and police are using surveillance footage to try and identify the thief.

If you have any information about Holly's whereabouts contact the shelter or the Twin Falls Police Department.
