TWIN FALLS, Idaho (KMVT-TV) - As girl scouts across America prepare to celebrate the organization's 100th birthday, its leaders are also trying to raise awareness about a rumor that's been circulating.

"Unfortunately this year we are hearing from girls and leaders that girls are being asked about an association that we allegedly have with Planned Parenthood," said Katy Kulesa, Girl Scout Membership Manger, central Idaho.

Mostly general questions are being asked, such as...

"Do you support Planned Parenthood? Are you affiliated with Planned Parenthood? Does Planned Parenthood provide programming for Girl Scouts? And, the answer to all of that is an emphatic no," said Kulesa.

For local troop leader Holly Dickinson, hearing about the latest social media chatter was a shock.

"You know, honestly I was really surprised. I had never heard anything like that before," said Dickinson.

Dickinson has been leading troop 316 in Twin Falls for two years.

"Every adult leader meeting I've been to is just about finding ways for the girls to get active and get involved," said Dickinson.

For generations the Girl Scouts has been teaching young girls life skills that build self confidence and character.

"They learn money management skills. They're learning to cooperate with other people. They're learning how to work on getting goals put together. And, most importantly they're working on their communication skills," said Kulesa.

The Girl Scout's cookie program is one of the most beneficial activities, but it's also the one being hit the hardest by the rumor.

Girl Scouts of Silver Sage serves more than 5,000 girls and 2,000 adult volunteers in southern Idaho, eastern Oregon and parts of northern Nevada.

And, in case you were wondering, cookie season begins in southern Idaho on March 2nd.
