Local Kimberly Man Celebrates 100 Years of Life
Kimberly, Idaho ( KMVT-TV / KSVT-TV ) A lot has changed over the past 100 years and a Kimberly, Idaho man, who celebrated his 100th birthday this past week has seen all of the changes of the past century.
"Well first thing is I never thought I'd live this long,” was Howard Kelsey’s reaction to turning 100 this past weekend
"There were more horse and buggies on the road then there were cars, hardly any airplanes at all. Things have changed so much."
He was born and raised in Manistique, Michigan. During his time in the Midwest Kelsey served as a bishop of a congregation for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.
Shannon Widmire, a bishop of a LDS congregation in Kimberly says he always has a story to tell. "We've heard lots of stories over the years of back in Michigan, when I was back in Michigan, this happened, you know so, those stories are about serving others and helping others.
Howard has 13 grandchildren and 43 great grandchildren. His wife Mary is so happy to see the community come together for his birthday. Mary says, "He is loved by everyone and everybody is so excited for his 100th birthday...we're just so happy with this occasion."
Others think it's a great way to celebrate a man whose helped and served his community for most of his life. Shannon Widmire points out, "He epitomizes what it means to be a good neighbor serve others and of course at his age now he can't do a lot but he loves the people and the people love him.
Howard Kelsey says, "This is the joy of my life. I love each and every one here."
