Local school districts stretch to meet improved nutrition guidelines
GOODING, ID (KMVT) School districts all across the country are updating their menus, thanks to new guidelines released by the US Department of Agriculture.
All of the schools that participate in the National School Lunch and School Breakfast Programs are being asked to change the school meals they serve to make them healthier. The School Nutrition Association says the Department of Agriculture has put plenty of time and effort into developing the new standards. Anji Baumann, Child Nutrition Director for Gooding and Shoshone Schools, says, "We have made the switch to fat-free and 1% milk, we already offer a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables, and we serve whole grains every day. We're working toward implementing some lower sodium entrees for our students." Baumann says despite a tight budget, the district will work hard to make sure that Gooding and Shoshone students will continue to have healthy meals at school. She says they'll take a closer look at the new standards, and begin working on the menus for the next school year. Jan. 30, 2012. Comments ( |
