Twin Falls, Idaho ( KMVT-TV / KSVT-TV ) Wednesday was known as Ash Wednesday, a popular day among Christians worldwide.
It is considered to be the first day of Lent, a religious observance where people fast for 40 days with the exception of Sundays.
The 40 day sign of penitence started Wednesday.
We sat down with the priest of St. Edwards Catholic Church in Twin Falls, as he explained the significance of the day.
"Today we have a special mass with the imposition of the ashes to remind ourselves that we are all called to do penance for our sins, but also for the world, to help the world", said Fr. Mike St. Marie.
After the 40 days, Lent will end on Holy Saturday, the day before Easter Sunday.
