Low Income Energy Assistance Program Could Be In Trouble

Twin Falls, Idaho ( KMVT-TV / KTWT-TV ) The South Central Community Action Partnership low income home energy assistance program may be in jeopardy. The federally developed program was established in 1986. It provides a onetime utility payment to assist low income families during the winter months.

With Congress threatening sequestration, the energy assistance program could be one of many programs that get cut.

"Locally it's going to affect somewhere between fifteen hundred and a thousand households and these folks are primarily seniors, folks that are disabled and families with small children. And right now we're still in winter and people are still needing their heat to keep their homes warm and with the loss of this program, we're not going to be able to provide that assistance," said SCCAP Executive Director Ken Robinette.

Robinette is traveling to Washington D.C. this week to meet with lawmakers. He is hoping that some type of agreement can be reached to keep the program going.
