Magic Valley Regional Airport Practices For Emergencies With Drill
Twin Falls, Idaho ( KMVT-TV / KTWT-TV ) In times of emergency, it may be hard to stay calm in the midst of chaos. But, for trained professionals, drills are the perfect time to train for potential disasters. That's why more than 200 people participated in an emergency drill at The Magic Valley Regional Airport.
The scenario: Two planes were diverted to Twin Falls, they collided, resulting in numerous injuries and fatalities.
"This is a great drill. There are so many pieces to it, so we are finding things that work extremely well and then we'll have a lot to work on going forward,” said Nicole Sirak Irwin, from the American Red Cross.
"We have a family center to deal with the surviving family members of the plane crash and that's something we haven't done before and it's been challenging for us, but it's good because we're learning a lot of things and a result of that, we're probably going to be rewriting much of our policy because of what we learn in this drill,” added Jim O’Donnell, the emergency drill director.
With more than 20 agencies participating in this drill, communication is key, but also presents a challenge.
"Communication is always an issue whenever you have things like this, when people are supposed to respond, where they're supposed to arrive and that's typical. So those have been probably some of the biggest glitches," O'Donnell said.
Area hospitals were activated in the drill, testing the medical staff's ability to respond to an intense situation.
"The hospital's role in this particular event is making sure we are ready to respond in a mass casualty incident. So for instance, we need to make sure that we have the processes and protocols in place to accept a large influx of patients if need be, to treat certain illnesses if they need be, but to make sure I guess our best game at all times no matter what happens," said Johanna Stagge, from St. Luke’s Magic Valley.
And how you practice is how you perform.
