SHOSHONE, Idaho (KMVT-TV) A major road project up north gets the necessary approval to move forward.

Construction is slated to begin this summer on an eight–mile reconstruction project just north of Shoshone on Idaho Highway 75.

The project will construct two new lanes from the north Shoshone city limit to near Mammoth Cave.

The Idaho Transportation Department said the project has been delayed for more than a year.

This is because of an environmental re–evaluation and the preparation of a mitigation site.

Public Information Officer Nathan Jerke says, "we'll end up having a two–lane road, similar to what we have now. It's going to be aligned, just on the east side of the current alignment. We're only constructing two lanes at this time because of funding restraints; we're not able to fund the full four–lane reconstruction and widening project of this roadway."

Jerke says this is one of the oldest sections of paved roadway between Twin Falls and the Wood River Valley.

The three old bridges in this stretch of road have posed major safety concerns for drivers.
