Many homeowners unprepared for canyon fire

Twin Falls

By Michelle Costa

We all know that wildfires are dangerous .. But if one started by your house, would it be safe? For some homeowners living along Twin Falls' canyon rim, unfortunately the answer was no.

Many weren't ready for a fire that started this week, threatening homes.

Cynthia Hall and her family have a new view in their backyard, unfortunately, it's not the view they bargained for.

Hall said, "I saw the smoke from Blue Lakes Country Club and rushed home and saw the fire. We weren't prepared for it at all."

Not being prepared is what Twin Falls Fire Dept. Captain Mitchell Brooks and other firefighters are now trying to prevent.

Brooks said,"We have a dozen a year along the canyon rim that do actually threaten homes. It was surreal. I told my driver that this was a big one. It's very tough. What we had to do basically was prioritize everything and we were going from one home to the next. The good news is the homeowners in this area did a good job with defensible space.. what I mean by that is they cleared out up to the canyon. That gives us the opportunity to protect their home like we did the other day."

While the Halls never thought a fire like this could happen to them .. They now know they need to be more prepared.

Hall said, "No wooden fences probably no sage brush.. we have some projects ahead of us."

Although it will cost them thousands of dollars to fix up their home, they say, they've learned their lesson.
