Boise, Idaho ( KMVT-TV / KTWT-TV) - A rancher from Oakley is in an extremely influential position.

Republican Scott Bedke is the Speaker of the Idaho House of Representatives.

Bedke defeated three–term speaker Lawerence Denney for the spot.

It's a spot that many dream to hold.

"It's a dynamic process. It's never a dull moment,” said Scott Bedke, Speaker of the Idaho House of Representatives.

Meet Scott Bedke. He was elected the Speaker of the House in December.

"You go and work hard every day. You do that for 10–12 years in a row and good things happen,” said Bedke.

Good things while challenging. Bedke is now a leader among a fresh set of faces. Almost half of the 70–member Idaho house is new.

"I was a policy guy and now I manage them and that transition is different. The leadership of the House is responsible to keep the trains moving on time and the right cargo on there. The values instilled in me in the Magic Valley are values I bring to the Legislature,” said Bedke.

But, that first day as speaker is one he'll never forget.

"I was humbled, proud, wishing my Dad could see. It was a personal moment. It was a big deal. I felt I was prepared. The state won't miss a beat because Scott Bedke was the Speaker. I will do everything I can. I pledge my best efforts,” said Bedke.

Efforts the entire state will benefit from.

When Bedke isn't legislating, he's ranching.

His term as Speaker of the House lasts for two years
