Minidoka County Considers Bridge Jumping Ban

By KMVT News

Rupert, Idaho (KMVT-TV) The Minidoka County Commissioners are considering a possible ordinance which would keep people from jumping off of bridges into the Snake River.

The three bridges they're thinking about are the Overland Bridge in Burley, the Burley-Heyburn Bridge, and Montgomery Bridge on Baseline Road east of Rupert. The county prosecutor says the law isn't set in stone, but it might involve a joint venture with neighboring Cassia County.

Minidoka County Prosecutor Lance Stevenson says, "It's something that was brought up due to safety concerns, due to old bridge remnants under the water. Also folks traveling in and out or beneath them as they jump."

Stevenson says the proposed ordinance is just in the beginning stages. The commissioners will continue to hammer out the proposal.

To make sure the potential law is consistent with Cassia County, Stevenson says Cassia County would need to adopt a similar ordinance.
