Craters of the Moon, Idaho (KMVT-TV) What's the name of that flower growing here in the lava field? Ben Nash comes to your rescue with a new app called "Wildflowers of Craters of the Moon." Right now it's available for Apple's i-Series devices, and you can find it in the iTunes store, or search for it on the internet.

Nash says, "It's got 76 plants on it. They're not all wildflowers. We wanted to include the other important species as well that may be of interest to visitors, especially Limber Pine and other things like that."

Nash is an intern with the Student Conservation Association. He gathered the information and photos, and Utah-based Howe Software modified an existing program to create this one. Nash says they hope to release a version for Android phones sometime next year.

Nash says, "I'm already preparing 30 more plants to add to the app. We're looking at possibly adding some of the weeds that we have to deal with in the park, so visitors can be aware of that issue."

Friday and Saturday night, the Idaho Falls Astronomical Society will host a star party at Craters of the Moon, and tomorrow evening is "National Observe the Moon Night."

Take the Loop Drive until you get to the "Caves Area" parking lot. The star party will go all night.

Nolan Olson is the Astro Volunteer in the Park, and he says, "A few challenges this year because of the quantity of smoke. But a lot of the gazing that we're doing is more or less straight up. So we can work around the smoke."

If you're going to the star party, you'll need to pay the eight dollar entrance fee to Craters of the Moon, since it is a National Park. Olson says the campgrounds fill up pretty quick for events like this one, and camping sports are "first come, first served."
