Jerome, Idaho (KMVT-TV) The Head Start program first got under way nation wide back in 1965. Since then, millions of American children have gotten the boost they need to succeed in school.

Now the city of Jerome has a brand new Head Start Center. Eight months ago, a busload of head start kids and a crowd of adults braved icy winter winds to break ground for a new center in Jerome.

Thanks to the College of Southern Idaho, now the building for the new Head Start and Early Head Start Center at 220 Third Avenue West in Jerome is complete and most of the playground area outside is finished. The Early Head Start Program is for children age zero to three and their families, while Head Start is for kids ages three to five.

Teri Anderson, Supervisor for the North Side Center in Jerome, says, "It's to get these kids ready for kindergarten, especially for the three to five children. But we also work with the families, with goal setting in different areas like nutrition, education, and different things like that where we go into the home with home visits."

The new Jerome Head Start Center has roughly 6,000 square feet of space, and right now they're serving just over 100 kids and their families.

Head Start Parent Stephanie Nevarez says, "The teachers can always tell. Was your kid in Head Start? Yes. Of course, they're always ready for school ahead of their class, great learners."

The new center also has one-way windows in the classrooms so parents can see how their children are doing in Head Start. Nevarez says as a parent, it's a great feeling to know that Head Start supports the children's parents, allowing them to make decisions about policies, budgets, hiring, and interviews related to the center.

Anderson says, "Parents will be that first teacher for the rest of their lives, really. So we're with those children for maybe one or two years. But those parents are the ones that make the real difference in their lives, and that's what we want to facilitate."

CSI'S new Head Start Center In Jerome will hold a ribbon cutting and open house, which will begin at 4:00 p.m. Thursday, November 15th.
