More College Students Feel A Sense Of Entitlement
Twin Falls, Idaho ( KMVT-TV / KTWT-TV ) Do your kids feel a sense of entitlement?
Just wait until they get older, a new study reveals college students think they're more special than ever.
The reason why? College students feel a sense of entitlement.
Studies show there has been a dramatic rise in the number of students who describe themselves as being 'above average' in academics, self-confidence and the drive to achieve.
"One of the disservices we did to our kids in trying to build self-esteem which was a great idea, but we went about it in the wrong way. We gave them rewards for just showing up. So now they think they have to earn something when they really didn't have to earn anything” said life coach Kristi Fowler.
The report shows, if you ask a college student who the greatest generation is, they might respond by pointing in a mirror.
"This is a huge problem and were going to see a lot more of it because we have another generation coming up, we haven't fixed the problem, we never fixed the mentality” said Fowler
Researchers also found this behavior stems from parenting, how young people are treated by their parents, caregivers, and their environment.
Making them believe they are better and entitled but, how do parents correct the problem?
"Teaching them a work ethic, teaching them how to take responsibility for their actions. How to give their all and accept that sometimes that you're not the best. That doesn't mean you're a bad person, there might be something else your good at”said Fowler.
A Generation therapists believe need to learn how to strive for excellence from parents.
