Cache Traveller is one of the top finishers at the O'Leary Middle School 5K run.
Says Traveller, "today we ran 3.1 (miles) which was further than normal but that was high school so that's normal. I think I was 18 minutes or something like that.”
Traveller is a part of the O'Leary Middle School cross country team that went undefeated this year.
This, despite needed repairs on the track.
The second annual 5K helped raise money for a new track.
Says Marjie Atkins, cross country coach, "It needed resurfacing; we haven't had a track meet here for many years. We had to go to the high school. It was well over $100,000 to get this resurfaced and have rubber on top so we've had many fundraisers and donations."
Traveller adds, "I'm really excited for a track here and we get to host our own meet and especially for my younger brother in 7th grade."
Atkins notes, "The high school is a couple miles away from here. We had to bus them over; it was kind of a hassle. It was nice for the high school to include us and help us out there, but it will be nice to do it on our own."
The team makes it clear that the whole community came together to make the new track possible.
Says Atkins, "The whole school bought into it knowing how much we needed it and we all took part in it."
And one of the best parts?
Atkins says, "I think some pride in the track, pride in the school and the rubber track is great for our kids and it’s a lot safer. So now it will be safe."
