JEROME COUNTY, ID (KMVT-TV) - Discussions about a rifle range in eastern Jerome County are underway yet again.

The Jerome County Commissioners are looking at possibly opening up a range three miles west of the Jerome Minidoka county line.

But, this proposal is worrying people who live in the area.

The Carneys own an organic straw field being a farmer is something they pride themselves on.

But, their farm life may soon be disturbed.

"We like the serenity. It's not that we are against guns, we just don't want them shooting in our backyard,” said Polly Carney, Carney Farms.

"They can't guarantee that the bullets are going to go in the dirt every time,” said Paul Carney, Carney Farms.

The Carneys aren't alone.

According to them, there are 50 homes in a 3 mile radius of the proposed range.

Dan Schaeffer is also in that area.

"It's the "what ifs." What if someone gets shoot? You can't replace a life,” said Dan Schaeffer, Schaeffer Farms.

The proposed range is something the Jerome County Commissioners have talked about for years and it's on the agenda once again.

"My idea for Monday is just to get a vote of yes or no from the Commissioners. This is just so we can decide whether or not to sponsor it or to not pass it. Then it will go to a public hearing. BLM will look at everything from sound to aesthetics to is this a practical place to put a gun range?” said Charlie Howell, Jerome County Commissioner.

Putting a gun range among the farmland, sage brush and wildlife, it's something the Carneys describe as unacceptable.

The Jerome County Commissioners are looking over the proposal on Monday at 2 pm.

They're expecting the Bureau of Reclamation, Bureau of Land Management and the applicant of the rifle range to be at the meeting.
