Twin Falls Firefighters' Reminder: Prepare For Wildfires

Tools

By Michelle Costa

Wildfire season is upon us and it's important to be prepared if one starts by your home.

The Twin Falls Fire Department is inspecting homes to make sure they'll be ready for fires.

In 2009, more than one thousand wildfires scorched 22,000 acres of land in the state.

Some tips to be prepared: review your insurance policy, fireproof your rooftop, make sure your house number is visible from the street, consider installing a home sprinkler system, develop an emergency preparedness plan.

Local firefighters said the most important thing though is keeping a good defensible space.

"A good defensible space would be about 100 foot of clear green grass .. a few small shrubs .. keep the trees to a minimal and space them out to where the fire can't travel from tree top to tree top to their house,” said Cpt. Mitchell Brooks, Twin Falls Fire Department.
