It's the holiday season, but not everyone is spreading holiday cheer.
A recent stint of car thefts has officers warning of a "Grinch" in the magic valley.

Officer Josh Hayes of the Twin Falls Police Department notes, "we've had a huge rash-- usually during the holiday season and the reason for that is people are starting to leave things out in their vehicles. So the criminalists, they look at that and take that as an opportunity to get in the vehicle to take those things. We're talking about iPods, cell phones, anything of value."

Officers have noticed that most of the cars burglarized have been parked on the street, and in dark areas.

Hayes adds, “from 2012 to this year we've had 279 vehicle burglaries.”

Since December 1st, 18 incidents have been reported this month, showing a significant increase.

Hayes notes, “that doesn't seem like a lot, but it is a lot and 90 percent of them were vehicles unlocked.”

Some helpful tips include setting a car alarm, parking in well lit areas, and keeping important items out of view.

Just a few precautions to ensure your holiday season is a happy one.
