Repairs Underway To 850 West Road Overpass Near Burley Following Crash
Burley, Idaho ( KMVT-TV / KSVT-TV ) - Work is underway this week to open lanes to traffic on both Interstate 84 and the 850 West Road, following a crash that damaged the overpass bridge last Friday. Friday’s fatal semi-truck crash destroyed a concrete bridge pier and guardrail approaching the bridge in the interstate median, located about three miles west of Burley. Since the crash, traffic has been restricted to one lane on I-84 and all traffic closed on the 850 West Road overpass.
Work to replace approximately 200 feet of guardrail in the westbound lanes of I-84 is taking place, with the goal of opening both westbound lanes by Thursday.
Crews also are working to open a single lane of 850 West Road on the overpass to allow light-weight vehicles. The crossing is expected to be open by early next week. A 10-ton vehicle limit and a 10-foot width limit will be in effect for all traffic crossing over the bridge.
Bridge plans and specifications for repair are being prepared for replacement of the concrete pier and repair to the pier cap. A timeline for the repairs is not yet determined. The bridge is temporarily being supported by wood supports until bridge repairs are completed.
ITD is using an emergency contract to expedite the repairs. The initial cost of repairs will be state funded until the cost is recovered from the driver’s insurance.
