Twin Falls, Idaho (KMVT-TV) Americans stepped up their spending at retail businesses in September, reflecting higher consumer confidence.

In a recent retail sales report by the department of commerce, sales rose one point one percent last month.

Local businesses are seeing the spending trend.

"Business has been steady throughout the year; we'll see an up climb in our holiday season as we always looking forward to. As far as things goes we have been steady and we've had a really good response from the people in the area for being a locally owned business” said Pat Gebauer Sales Associate, MaRozie.

The retail sales report is closely watched because it is the government's first monthly look at consumer spending.

Retail sales drive nearly 70-percent of economic activity.
