Twin Falls, Idaho ( KMVT-TV / KTWT-TV ) - Local drive–ins are asking your help to keep their doors open.
At the end of this year, 35 millimeter film will be discontinued.
The drive-in needs to make a huge investment to digital or face going dark.
You can help to "Save an American Icon" by voting online.
The drive–ins are a staple in our community that many hope will stick around.
"I think it would be sad for our community because there is not a lot around in this small town,” said Jodi Tilo, Wants drive-ins open.
"It would be very sad because I think it's a great experience to come and watch movies. It brings back a lot of memories,” said Kennedy Bartlome, Enjoys the Memories.
Once an American staple, only 368 drive–ins remain. But, they're in danger of disappearing.
"All of the movie companies are switching from film to digital so they won't be making any film movies so we won't be able to play any new movies unless we switch to a digital projector,” said Michael Chapple, Manager, Motor Vu.
The price tag to upgrade to digital projection is more than $75,000.
That's a lot of money for a small drive–in.
“It all depends on the night, but that's a lot of money. It would take awhile to make that much money," said Chapple.
Drive–ins in Twin Falls are integrated into the community. It's that sense of community that staff is hoping will keep them open.
Project Drive–in sponsored by Honda is helping drive–ins by donating five digital projectors.
Without a new projector, the drive–ins may not exist. But, they need your vote.
"Whoever gets the five most top votes gets them," said Chapple.
"I hope that we raise enough money to keep them open,” said Will Tipton, Twin Falls.
"If you get rid of it, your kids won't have the same experience,” said Jessica Lee, Likes the Drive-ins.
"I remember going to a ton. It's a huge part of my life. It would make me really sad to see it go away,” said Emily Hosman, Buhl.
Without your help these ticket booths may never open up again.
Normally, the Motor Vu Drive–in closes on Labor Day.
But this year, they are staying open longer on a week to week basis.
Voting ends next Monday, September 9th.
