School Celebrates 50 Years On Former Principal's 95th Birthday
Buhl, Idaho (KMVT-TV) There was no shortages of birthdays in Buhl this week.
Popplewell Elementary School opened 50 years ago. Lee Popplewell, whom the school is named after, was principal there from 1962 until 1980. A special celebration was held at the school to honor his 95th birthday.
Popplewell says, "I always tell the joke that the reason they named the school after me was they didn't want to fire me, so they said, if you'd just quit, we'd name the school after you. So I said, I think I'll just retire."
Popplewell's son Ted, who attended school in Buhl and now works for the Twin Falls School District, says the school that bears his father's name is in surprisingly good condition because all the students have taken care of it during the last 50 years.
