South Central Regional Legislative Tour And Preview
Twin Falls, Idaho (KMVT-TV) Thursday marked the South Central Regional Legislative Tour and Preview. The occasion was a real opportunity to catch up with legislators before they leave for the session. The group met at Canyon Ridge High School first as the school is rich in diversity and has a strong English Language Learner program to show for it.
School officials told me they're partnering with legislators regarding reform of Idaho's public education system.
Canyon Ridge High School used this video as an icebreaker if you will, to discuss the Co–Teaching Model. English Language Learners are very familiar with this type of instruction.
And with the grant the school received, it's honing down on working with the refugee students.
Brady Dickinson, Principal, Canyon Ridge High School adds, "to work on language skills and with the grant, it has really allowed us to go deeper and focus on content, to help our students not only master the english language, but also make sure they're getting the academics that they need."
Canyon Ridge High School students Sara, Sanjay and Joshi represent Iraq, Nepal and Burma.
Members of the tour asked them questions and heard from the trio who comprise just three of the 70 ELL students at Canyon Ridge.
Loc is a Canyon Ridge grad and documentary producer. A former refugee himself, he created this documentary when he was 17.
Dickinson adds, "the students that come in, not only are trying to learn english, but many of them came to us having an interrupted education. So they have a learning gap in their education."
Now Dickinson says the legislators have a major task at hand with the propositions being voted down earlier this month.
"It's our hope as a school system, we can really work with our legislators to bring about real reform to our education system and we're excited about working with our legislators."
Putting education at the forefront of the upcoming session.
The Twin Falls School District and the Idaho Chamber Alliance hosted Thursday's tour.
The 2013 legislative session will convene January 7th.
