Staying Safe Outdoors This Spring And Summer
Twin Falls, Idaho ( KMVT-TV / KTWT-TV ) It's that time of the year. The warmer weather and sunshine mean it's time to get back outside and enjoy those great outdoor activities here in the magic valley. Clark Alvin was one of those people. He was out walking his dog Sunday afternoon.
"I don't have any choice. Every day we walk over here when the weather is decent because she drives me crazy if I don't," said Clark Alvin.
With lots of people back walking and bicycling again, safety is a concern for the twin falls police department.
"So just be aware that there will be bicyclists. They are also smaller, not as easy to see. There will be a lot more people out running and jogging, especially down on the canyon grade. So if you are driving down through there, just be aware that you will be sharing the road,” said Sgt. Luke Allen with the Twin Falls Police Department.
Drivers aren't the only ones who need to pay close attention. If you are riding a bicycle there are several things you can do to keep yourself safe.
"Bicyclists need to travel in the direction with traffic. Pay attention to traffic. Where helmets and be safe. And not just turn without looking, use your hand signals too so that the motorists and other people know what your intentions are,” said Sgt. Luke Allen.
But bicyclists and walkers aren't the only concern.
"Motorcycles are out in droves. I have seen a bunch of them over the past week. Everybody is getting out. Just be aware that they are out as well. And they can sneak up alongside of you. You don't notice them as easy as a car. So take time to look in your blind spot and notice these things so you can avoid a potential accident," said Sgt. Luke Allen with the Twin Falls Police Department.
But Clark Alvin hasn't had many problems when he's been out walking.
"Not really, people are very considerate in general," said Alvin.
