Staying Warm While Waiting For The School Bus

Twin Falls, Idaho ( KMVT-TV / KTWT-TV ) At this time of year, waiting for the school bus in the cold is no fun. That's why you want to make sure that your child can stay warm. Even here in Idaho, we have to protect ourselves and our children against frostbite and hypothermia.

Early in the morning, it's not only cold, it's also dark. And if the wind's blowing, that can make temperatures bitterly colder than they already are.

Concerned parent Theresa Barry says, "It's cold, before the sun comes up, it's cold. I would never let my kids just stand out at the bus stop waiting. If the bus is late, I usually just drive them to school instead of waiting for the bus, because we can do that."

A local doctor says parents need to make sure their kids are dressed warmly. He says nothing will bring on hypothermia and frostbite more quickly than having wet clothing.

Dr. Glen Page from Cassia Regional Medical Center in Burley says, "With these little children, be sure that you properly dress them, make sure that their clothes are dry. Be sure that they're not exposed to the environment for long periods of time."

Dr. Page says even though kids love to throw snowballs, keeping their hands dry will prevent them from getting frostbite. And he says if your children wear mittens, that will allow them to curl their fingers together and keep their hands warmer.

Barry says, "I don't like to leave my kids standing at the bus stop, because they can't dress warm enough. Because there's no place to keep their warm clothes, like their snow pants and hats and whatnot at school."

Finally, if you can park your car near the bus stop, that will give your child a place to stay warm while waiting for the bus, especially if it happens to be late.
