Student-Led Conferences, A Win At Burley

By Brittany Cooper

Burley, Idaho ( KMVT-TV / KSVT-TV ) Burley High School is enjoying the benefits of student–led conferences.

The conference is set up in a homeroom atmosphere. The advisory teacher acts as the monitor for when the parent comes in to visit with the student.

Prior to this, the group used to meet in a large room, and for some, it was uncomfortable.

For those we spoke with, this new method is an improvement.

Terry Kinkead, a teacher at Burley High School says, "the student fills out an assessment and the teacher also fills out the assessments. This allows the teacher and student to teach if there's a gap to see between how they're perceiving the progress or where they're having difficulties."

"We've been able to make better interactions with the students, the parents and teachers. Just getting down on a one–one level," adds Madison Searie, a senior at Burley.

The conferences are held every semester.
