Study: Idaho car drivers overpaying for highways

By Associated Press

BOISE, Idaho (AP) _ Drivers of passenger cars are paying a
disproportionate share of Idaho's highway maintenance costs
compared with big trucks.

A study released Tuesday shows cars are overpaying by 8 percent,
while heavy trucks that do more damage are underpaying by 14
percent, according to one scenario.

In another scenario, the discrepancy is even wider, with cars
overpaying by 26 percent and trucks underpaying by about 27
percent.

The study was completed by Richland, Wash.-based consulting firm
Battelle.

Members of a task force assembled by Gov. C.L. ``Butch'' Otter
to investigate how to pay for Idaho roads now will spend the next
month reviewing these findings.

Lt. Gov. Brad Little says recommendations they adopt will likely
become a ``hot potato,'' as some vehicle owners may be asked to pay
a bigger share.
