Sugar Beet Crop Could Be Damaged From The Cold Temperatures

Tools

By Brandon Redmond

Twin Falls, Idaho ( KMVT-TV / KTWT-TV ) The late season cold temperatures are hurting the sugar beet crop across the Magic Valley. The freezing temperatures and high winds have experts worried. There is a good chance that over half of the sugar beet crop will have to be replanted.

Nearly twenty five percent of sugar beets have already been replanted and that number is expected to rise. Sugar beets that have sprouted up enough can withstand the frost. Nighttime temperatures in the twenties and in some areas in the teens have taken a toll on the normally considered safe sugar beets.

Now farmers have the problem of trying to find more seed in order to replant the damaged crops.
