NATIONWIDE (KMVT-TV) 42,500,000 Americans are projected to travel at least 50 miles this year, an increase of 4% from 2010.

Officials believe the numbers imply Americans are putting family first over expenses.

Here in Idaho, AAA predicts 14% of the population will travel the distance this year.

We asked travelers from near and far where they're headed.

Gail Dietz-Sola, an Eden resident headed to Twin Falls says, "I'm going to my friend Michelle's house for Thanksgiving tonight."

Robert McWilliams, a Bozeman, MT resident headed to Reno, NV says, "we're going to go from Bozeman to Reno. It takes about 14 hours and we're going to visit my father and stepmother."

Challis resident Steven Bauchman says, "I've got my daughter and her husband and they're veterinarians and they live in California and we're there to spend the holidays with them and go to the Notre Dame–Stanford game."

And looking back this year, Memorial Day was flat for travel. July 4th and Labor Day saw slight decreases from the past year.
