The Cost of Completion: Senior Year of High School
Twin Falls, Idaho (KMVT-TV) - We always hear about how expensive college is, but many neglect to talk about the costs for the last year of high school.
These include paying for yearbooks, school dances and of course graduation.
For Kim Bishop and her son, Trae, senior year of high school came quick.
“It came really fast. I'm not looking forward to him leaving, but I'm proud of him,” said Kim Bishop, Parent.
"I play football, basketball and baseball. It's tough and there are a lot of late nights coming home and doing homework after practices and games,” said Trae Bishop, Canyon Ridge High School, Senior.
The Bishops are among 2,000 families in the Twin Falls School District with a student in their last year of primary education.
"It doesn't surprise me the costs. Are we more prepared for it? No. We take it as it goes. You know it's coming up,” said Kim Bishop.
But, a report on smartaboutmoney.org indicates if a family plans ahead by setting a budget, they'll manage much easier.
How much are you really spending for senior year?
Senior photographs can range from $25 to $500 for a professional shoot.
Then there are yearbooks. And remember, each college your student applies to will have an application fee ranging from $35 to $80.
There are school dances which the average American family spends $800 on prom–related costs.
And finally, graduation, including the price to rent or buy a cap, gown and tassel.
"It's overwhelming,” said Kim Bishop.
All this adds up, but with a budget in mind your student can break out of high school without breaking the bank.
Students could also pay for class rings and year–end fines like unreturned textbooks, library books or athletic equipment.
