Twin Falls, Idaho ( KMVT-TV / KTWT-TV ) Hospitals around the country celebrated some of the first births of 2014 today.

It's a new year with new expectations for most people...

But not many get to welcome a new baby.

For Natasha Dudley, call it the New Year’s of a lifetime.

"I'm excited, a little overwhelmed, a little scared... but I think I'm good,” she says.

Every year, there's much anticipation for who will give birth to the first baby of the new year... as a good-natured competition celebrated in hospitals around the country. A tradition honored here at St. Luke's.

The St. Luke's Magic Valley New Year’s baby… It's an annual competition, where every participant walks away with the treasure of a lifetime.

"Well, it's always exciting for the families and for the labor nurses, and there were a few moms laboring, and it wasn't really close... they were born a few hours apart, but there was a little competition maybe?" explains Kathie Gallaugher, Charge Nurse, Labor and Delivery.

"St. Luke's, along with Safe Kids, gives a whole bunch of gifts to our first time mom, first time baby of the new year," she adds.

Gift baskets adding up to an estimated four hundred dollar value.

Weighing in at 7lbs, 1 oz, meet the Magic Valley champion: Bentley Putman, the first baby of 2014.

As for the other contenders, the race this year wasn't even close...

"Yes, there was one other lady that was a few centimeters before me, but I got it," Dudley says.

"I just heard one of the nurses say, ‘Oh, you beat us,’" Gallaugher adds.

No matter what the date, the joy of new parents is timeless

St. Luke’s of Magic Valley had ten births alone on December 31st.

St. Luke's of Jerome is still waiting for its first baby of 2014.
