Twin Falls Mail Carriers Brave The Cold
Twin Falls, ID (KMVT TV) - The holidays are the busiest times of the year for the United States Postal Service.
This year, they plan to deliver 15.8 billion cards, letters and packages between Thanksgiving and Christmas Eve. But, in order for you to get those letters, we need mail carriers. How do they deal with these freezing temperatures? Layers. Despite snow, rain or the heat, mail carriers are out there making sure you get your mail: all 405–thousand pieces processed every minute. "Rain pants, jacket and ski gloves,” said Curtis Lent, USPS Mail Carrier. For Mail Carrier, Curtis Lent, it's a long list of what he's wearing for the day to stay warm. "Dress warm. Put layers on so you can put on and take off and I always carry extra clothing and gloves,” said Lent. And for his mail truck, it gets snow chains to grip the roads better. For the last 15 years, Lent's been walking from home to home racking up miles. "If you count a street that you walk up and down as two, that would be 70 blocks a day,” said Lent. Lent has one of the longest walking routes in the city. He delivers to 615 homes. The biggest problem he's seeing: people not shoveling their sidewalk. "It's pretty hard to go through the snow everyday and it's slippery. I think probably ever carrier has fallen at least once,” said Lent. Although it's not a job everyone would want, Lent wouldn't trade it for anything else. "I like being outside. I enjoy the people and the little kids especially in the summer time. It's fun for me,” said Lent. No matter hurricanes or blizzards, Lent is among 596,000 USPS employees making sure mail gets through. Here's a fun fact. The longest main street in America is located in Island Park, Idaho. It's 33 miles long. Remember to shovel your sidewalks and if you're planning to mail things for the holidays, the sooner, the better. Comments ( |
