Twin Falls curbside recycling program could change, encourage more to recycleTwin Falls
Are you willing to pay more to recycle? That's exactly what the city of Twin Falls may be asking you to do, if a change to the local curbside recycling program passes.
The city council's considering changing the current program to a single-stream program, which basically means you'll be able to recycle a lot more. We all know what the recycling boxes look like, but as KMVT’s Michelle Costa drove around the city today, the number of them actually in use seems rather sparse. Georgia Credille agrees, saying she's among the few that recycle. Credille said, "I don't put my stuff out every week because they want it in grocery bags so I just wait until it gets really full." But, with a new recycling program, Credille thinks more people will help out."It would be nice to be able to recycle more things than we do now." "If we throw everything together that would be even easier." Making things easier is exactly what the city's hoping to do to encourage more people to recycle. Travis Rothweiler, with the city of Twin Falls, said, "Right now, we estimate 20% will recycle at some point during the month, they estimate the pounds per household is 5 to 10 and with single stream that could jump to 30 pounds in some places that goes to 60 pounds." Right now, people can recycle into smaller bins, but can only have 3 materials. In the future, if this passes, they'll be able to use a garbage-sized one and it all won't even need to be sorted. Resident Dan Kriz said, "I think it's great. I think more people would recycle." Kriz is all for a new system, even with an increase of a dollar fifty. "It won't bother me. $1.50 would be just fine. Others like Carol Bearup are okay with paying more too. She said, "I think it's a good idea because it would be less work for homeowners." If we keep the current recycling program, the cost would decrease by one dollar and eighty cents. Comments ( |
