Two Possibly Bright Comets Will Visit Earth In 2013

Twin Falls, Idaho (KMVT-TV / KTWT-TV) There have been plenty of internet stories about a very bright comet swinging close to Planet Earth this year.

Actually there are two comets that could be very bright in 2013. Comet PanSTARRS will be visible only in the early evening hours just after sunset during the second and third weeks of March. But there's been some misunderstanding about Comet Ison, which is due to show up in early morning skies during late November and early December.

Observatory Coordinator Chris Anderson says, "When Comet Ison at its brightest is when it will be closest to the sun, which means it'll be unobservable at that point. So yes, it might get as bright as the full moon, but no one's going to see it that bright, because it'll be lost in the sun's glare."

If you'd like to find out more about Comets Ison and PanSTARRS this Friday night January 11th at 6:00 p.m., Anderson will give an astronomy talk on "Comets: Past, Present, And Future" in the Herrett Center's Rick Allen Room. Admission is $2.50 for adults, and $1.50 for children.
