Twin Falls, Idaho (KMVT-TV) The 22nd Annual Crop Hunger Walk is in the books.

The purpose of the event is to raise money to alleviate world and local hunger.

Dozens took to the canyon rim path Saturday to raise money to end hunger in our community and abroad.

"Seventy–five percent of the money we raise today will go to Church World Services. Twenty–five percent of the money raised today will stay here in the Magic Valley,” said Rene Horner, Event Chairman.

Crop Hunger Walks are community–wide events sponsored by the church world service.

Crop is an acronym for the Christian Rural Overseas Project.

"They distribute the money to poor people all around the world to help dig wells, to teach them how to farm,” said Horner.

This year crop hunger walks will raise close to four million dollars for local food banks, pantries, community gardens and other local efforts nationwide.

Safe Harbor is the local organization that will receive this year's funding.

"Safe Harbor has been providing housing for people that are living on the streets or hard times. And, they're also going to be doing a soup kitchen on Saturdays,” said Horner.

Participants started the walk right here at Elevation, walked down to the Visitor's Center and ended the walk again right here at Elevation.

"We've raised about five–thousand dollars so far just today and expect probably one or two–thousand more dollars coming in the next couple weeks,” said Horner.

Melanie Halsell has been taking part in the Twin Falls Crop Hunger Walk for over a decade.

"Sometimes the problem seems so extreme and so global, but this is something we can do to help in our community. It's an immediate need, it's a daily need," said Melanie Halsell, Crop Hunger Walk participant.

Just one small group of people trying to make a difference in the lives of many.

It's not too late to donate.
