Wendell Comes Together to Support Teacher

Wendell, Idaho (KMVT-TV) Mrs. Matthews has educated hundreds of students in the Wendell School District over the past thirty years.

Lynette Brown is a teacher at Wendell Elementary. "She taught so many of us and did everything she could for anybody and she's such a giving person."

Instead of giving to the community, this time it's the community trying to give back to Mrs. Matthews. Matthews is battling her second round of cancer and the Wendell community is raising money to help with her medical bills.

Brown is one of the organizers of the fundraiser. "We got together to help her out. The Star Corporation donated 1500 dollars to give us seed money to buy hats and bracelets. So we started our hats off to Mrs. Matthew's campaign."

The school district honored Matthews during the Wendell Homecoming game Friday Evening. She was escorted in front of the crowd and all of her past students in the crowd were asked to stand to recognize her.

In 2011 Matthews was nominated for teacher of the year in Idaho. Despite battling the cancer, she has continued to make her way to the Wendell Elementary School to teach her kindergarten class.

All Schools in Wendell are selling hats and bracelets. Donations can also be sent to the School District Office and the money will go directly into the fund.

Matthews will be taking a leave of absence in October as she undergoes rigorous cancer treatments.
