Wheat Commissioner Comments On Asian Trade Mission

Acequia, Idaho ( KMVT-TV / KTWT-TV ) Around 20 Idaho companies participated in the trade delegation to Asia in April.

Governor Otter led a variety of high–level meetings with government and corporate officials during the six–day mission. One of the key success stories of this trip is governor otter promoting Idaho's wheat industry as the market leader.

This is Ned Moon, the Vice–Chairman of the Idaho Wheat Commission. Moon represented the commission in Asia and met with existing customers in Korea, Taiwan and Vietnam.

As Moon explains, "they all buy us wheat and Taiwan buys a lot from Idaho and we were just mainly meeting with them, rekindling relationships with them and asking what they need from us as an Idaho grower to buy more wheat from us."

Moon discovered they want more hard white wheat for their noodle production. This becomes a goal not just for Idaho farmers, but for others around the country "to capture that market more fully from Australia is to grow more hard white wheat because the noodle market is expanding in Asia ...The income has increased, the wives are working now. It's an easy fix and that's why the noodle industry has grown a lot."

Moon's day job is working at Jentzsch–Kearl Farms, based in Acequia and operating 20–thousand acres.

"We have about 500 acres of hard white on our farm ...it's becoming more popular, there is a lot of hard white grown in the United States and in Idaho, but the domestic buyers buy it all up so we need to produce more to get the overseas market as well."

That's a good thing too because a little more than half of Idaho's wheat crop is exported each year.

"A lot of soft white is exported to Portland and over to Asia."

Meeting face to face, strengthening ties in the long–run.

The Governor is apparently running another trade mission this fall to Russia.
