IDAHO, (KMVT-TV) In less than 24 hours Idaho will begin its wolf hunting season. Last week a federal appeals court denied a request to halt wolf hunts.
Groups like Alliance for the wild Rockies asked for an emergency injunction. Pending a challenge to a congressional action that removed wolves from federal protection in Idaho and Montana.
What is different about these hunts is there is no limits in some areas.
That means there is no quota on how many the state will allow to be hunted.
But hunters were only able to purchase two wolf tags per season.
Up to this point the regional supervisor for Idaho Fish and Game says tag sales have been a little slow.
Regional supervisor Jerome Hansen says "As of Friday a little over six thousand tags statewide for wolves, that's in comparison to about 30,000 we sold about two years ago from our first hunt. so we're a little behind, but I think I firmly expect hunters as the big game season starts they'll be picking up their tags probably before they head to the field."
The animals are a particularly hard to hunt.
