Twin Falls, Idaho (KMVT-TV) Smoking in all public places has been banned in the state of Idaho since 2004.

Some businesses in Twin Falls are making a push to become completely smoke-free.

While the Idaho Clean Indoor Air Act prohibits smoking in public places or areas, some facilities and cities still designate whether their businesses can choose to ban smoking.

Elvia Caldera, a Senior Health Education Specialist for the South Central Public Health District says, "The City of Oakley passed an ordinance for a smoke-free park in their city and we've worked with two businesses here in Twin Falls to pass a smoke-free workplace."

The South Central Public Health District has spear-headed smoke-free efforts in the Magic Valley.

St. Luke's Magic Valley, the College Of Southern Idaho, and O'Dunkens Draught House are all smoke-free environments.

The City of Twin Falls passed a policy about two years ago that affected some city properties.

"We did do this banning of the tobacco products around these areas and we're looking at where kids congregate and also families congregate,” says the Director of Parks and Recreation for the City of Twin Falls, Dennis Bowyer.

For all of parks in the City of Twin Falls, smoking is not permitted within 50 feet of certain areas.

But the city doesn't want to single any residents out.

Bowyer says, "We're not out there watching people to make sure they're not doing that but using common sense, see the signs and the rights of non-smokers, while we're hopefully respecting the rights of smokers that they still have areas in the parks they still can smoke."

The Health District also holds classes to help employees of smoke-free businesses quit smoking.
