YMCA "Silver" Classes Keep Seniors Fit
Twin Falls, Idaho ( KMVT-TV / KTWT-TV ) Staying physically fit when you get older is easier than you might think. It's all about keeping your mind and body active.
When it comes to working out, it doesn't take a lot of effort to see some noticeable improvement. These senior citizens aren't just getting older, they're getting better, thanks to senior fitness programs like "Silver Sneakers" at the YMCA.
Bill Protzmann says, "Balance and endurance. I've gone from 5 pound weights to 7 pound weights. Overall, it's been very much fun because of this group."
The Silver Sneakers class builds muscle strength and range of motion. The seniors show up an hour before class to socialize, and it's obvious everybody has a good time.
Kay Parker, Group Fitness Director at the YMCA, says, "We had a couple of clients that came in and participated in our Silver Sneakers program. They started with walkers, but they don't use them now. So it's a great benefit for the seniors."
The YMCA has a wide variety of classes for seniors, everything from arthritis water to Zumba Gold. You'll be happy to know the Zumba classes have slower music than usual, and have less impact on older hips and knee joints. One woman says if she didn't come to the classes, she wouldn't even be walking now.
Jeanette Barbagallo says, "This has really kept me going. And I've met so many wonderful people. And the exercises, the instructors are wonderful."
The seniors range in age from their late 50's to their early 90's.
Other senior classes at the "Y" include cardio circuit and yoga benefit. Give them a call if you'd like to find out more.
