Mountain Home AFB Spared, But Re-Structured

By Faye Hoffman

Idaho will lose several hundred military and civilian jobs under the Pentagon's latest round of military base closures and re-assignments.

But the state's biggest installation, Mountain Home Air Force Base, will stay open.

It may be home to a different type of aircraft, though.

Under a re-alignment plan, Mountain Home would send its older F–15 and F–16 aircraft to other bases, and fly the newer F–15 E exclusively.

Elsewhere, the Air National Guard base at Boise’s Gowen Field would lose its C–130 cargo planes, and fly A–10 attack jets exclusively.

The Naval Reserve Center in Pocatello, with seven military jobs, would be closed.

All told, the plan would cost Idaho more than 1,300 jobs, most of them military.
That would be offset by a gain of nearly 700 military and 24 civilian positions.

Overall, the state could lose more than 650 jobs.

Idaho's Congressional Delegation immediately announced they'd work to keep the cutbacks from happening – and if that's not successful, to lessen the impact as much as possible.
