Homeless Vet Saves Shooting Victim

By Paul Johnson

Seattle, Washington (CNN) A veteran is being hailed as a hero this Independence Day after saving a shooting victim's life on a Seattle street. The homeless Gulf War Veteran, nicknamed "Staff Sergeant Royal," heard gunshots Monday night in Seattle's Belltown neighborhood, then sprang into action.
"Royal" told Seattle Police when he arrived on the scene, he found a homeless friend of his had been wounded in an argument. Royal acted when he saw the man bleeding from his femoral artery. I was just glad I was there to be able to stop the bleeding, put a tourniquet around his leg, elevate his leg. That probably saved his life. The victim is in stable condition at a Seattle hospital.
Royal said his medic training from the first Gulf War allowed his effective response. Seattle Police say they believe "Royal's" story. The alleged gunman remains on the loose, and the authorities say they don't have enough information to share about a suspect.
